It wasn’t easy, but we persuaded Tod’s parents to let him go on a fishing expedition with me to Devil Lake. Once convinced, however, Mr. Munro entered into the spirit of the thing as if he were going along. They already had a tent. He bought Tod a new rising rod and made sure that we had everything else we might need, and promised to wake us so we could make an early start.

At an early breakfast the next morning, Mr. Munro had news for us.

“The parrot’s gone,” he said. “It disappeared from Walker’s shed some time last night.”

My eyes met Tod’s. “Mr. Smith has got him,” I whispered, “and that means he’s got the secret.”

Tod nodded. His face was white, but his eyes gleamed with excitement.

“Now it’s a race,” he said. “Who’ll be the first to find the devil’s face?”
